Summary

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia impair prospective memory (PM), or remembering future intentions. Dementia patients show greater PM deficits than MCI patients, even after accounting for other cognitive issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare prospective memory (PM) performance in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, and healthy controls.
  • To investigate the extent to which PM impairment in MCI and dementia is secondary to other cognitive deficits.

Main Methods:

  • Employed Virtual Week, a task simulating real-world prospective memory demands.
  • Compared performance across three groups: MCI (n=48), dementia (n=39), and controls (n=53).

Main Results:

  • Both MCI and dementia groups showed significant prospective memory (PM) impairments compared to controls.
  • Dementia patients exhibited a greater magnitude of PM deficit than MCI patients.
  • PM impairment persisted in both clinical groups even after controlling for other cognitive variables.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia experience generalized prospective memory (PM) difficulties.
  • While other cognitive deficits contribute, prospective memory itself appears uniquely disrupted in these conditions.
