Summary

Matching incentives to task rewards improves cognitive set shifting performance. This study found that aligning a participant's goal (promotion or prevention focus) with the reward structure (gains or losses) enhanced performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task.

Background:

  • Cognitive research indicates that regulatory focus (promotion vs. prevention) and task reward structure (gains vs. losses) can influence set shifting performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test if performance on a modified WCST is enhanced by a match between the global performance incentive and the local task reward structure in healthy young adults.

Main Methods:

  • A modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Task was administered to younger, healthy participants.
  • Participants were assigned to conditions with either a match or a mismatch between their regulatory focus and the task reward structure.
  • A baseline control group was included for comparison.

Main Results:

  • Participants in a regulatory match condition demonstrated superior set shifting compared to those in a mismatch condition.
  • Initial concept formation performance was equivalent between match and mismatch groups.
  • Mismatch participants performed significantly worse on set shifting than the regulatory match group, and also worse than baseline controls.
