This study identifies fatty infiltration of the myocardium as a cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy. This finding is the first to link cardiac fatty infiltration with restrictive hemodynamic patterns.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pathology
  • Medical Science

Background:

  • Restrictive cardiomyopathies result from various infiltrative processes.
  • Hemodynamic evidence of restrictive cardiac processes can stem from diverse etiologies.

Observation:

  • An obese male presented with hemodynamic findings indicative of a restrictive cardiac process.
  • Pericardial assessment was normal.
  • Myocardial biopsy during coronary artery bypass surgery revealed significant fatty infiltration.

Findings:

  • This case report is the first to demonstrate a direct association between myocardial fatty infiltration and restrictive cardiomyopathy.
  • Histologic evidence of fatty infiltration correlated with observed hemodynamic dysfunction.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This finding expands the differential diagnosis for restrictive cardiomyopathy.
  • Further research may explore the mechanisms and prevalence of fatty infiltration in restrictive cardiomyopathies.
