    Summary

    Sleep deprivation and cannabis interact to increase aggression in rats. This study highlights the roles of dopamine and noradrenaline in this drug-induced aggressive behavior, particularly after REM sleep loss.

    Background:

    • Previous research indicates cannabis induces aggression in rats deprived of REM sleep.
    • This effect is hypothesized to involve brain catecholamines, specifically dopamine (agonist) and noradrenaline (inhibitory).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the neurochemical mechanisms underlying cannabis-induced aggression following REM sleep deprivation.
    • To explore the roles of dopamine and noradrenaline in this behavioral response.

    • REM sleep deprivation in rats.
    • Administration of delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), nomifensine, apomorphine, and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase inhibitors.
