Genetic variations in the bovine prion protein gene (PRNP) influence susceptibility to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Chinese cattle show low frequencies of specific PRNP alleles linked to BSE, with notable differences in one indel polymorphism between affected and healthy animals.
