Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence01:16

Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence

The test of independence is a chi-square-based test used to determine whether two variables or factors are independent or dependent. This hypothesis test is used to examine the independence of the variables. One can construct two qualitative survey questions or experiments based on the variables in a contingency table. The goal is to see if the two variables are unrelated (independent) or related (dependent). The null and alternative hypotheses for this test are:
H0: The two variables (factors)...
Protection of Alcohols02:31

Protection of Alcohols

This lesson delves into the concept of protection and deprotection of a functional group fundamental to synthetic organic chemistry. These phenomena are explained in the context of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols.
Protection
It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...
Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Summary

Women experience higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) than men. Reducing alcohol consumption may help prevent IPV, as intoxication is linked to increased violence frequency.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Sociology
  • Criminology

Background:

  • Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health issue with varying prevalence across populations.
  • The role of alcohol consumption in intimate partner violence is complex and requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Brazil.
  • To determine the association between alcohol consumption and episodes of intimate partner violence.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study utilizing a multi-stage probability sample representative of the Brazilian population.
  • 1,445 married or cohabiting men and women were interviewed using a standardized, closed questionnaire in their homes.
  • Prevalence rates of IPV were calculated, and chi-square tests were employed to analyze gender differences.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of intimate partner violence was 10.7% for men and 14.6% for women.
  • Alcohol consumption was reported in 38.1% of male-perpetrated violence and 9.2% of female-perpetrated violence.
  • Women reported higher rates of male partner alcohol consumption during violence (44.6%) compared to men's reports of female partner alcohol consumption (30.8%).

Conclusions:

  • Women reported higher involvement in both perpetration and victimization of intimate partner violence.
  • Episodes of violence were four times more frequent when men were intoxicated, suggesting a strong link between alcohol and IPV.
  • Public policies targeting alcohol consumption reduction may be effective in preventing intimate partner violence.
