Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of continuous 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) infusion in patients with metastatic prostate cancer.
  • To assess the palliative effects of this treatment in symptomatic, refractory disease.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty patients with symptomatic, progressive metastatic prostate cancer received continuous 5-FU infusion (250-300 mg/M2/day) via a central venous catheter.
  • Patients were treated on an ambulatory basis, and outcomes including remission, disease stability, and toxicity were monitored.

  • Partial remission (10%) and stable disease (45%) were observed, with a mean duration of benefit of six months.
  • Most patients with benefit showed improvement in pain and performance status (ECOG).
