Background:

Primary health-care research necessitates collaboration with stakeholders, including consumers, service providers, and organizations.
Effective consumer engagement is crucial for ensuring research relevance and impact.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the inclusion of consumers in a South Australian study on suicide postvention services.
To identify key principles for effectively involving consumers in research processes.

Main Methods:

A concurrent mixed-method approach was employed.
Data were collected using questionnaires.
The study was conducted in an Australian metropolitan area.

Main Results:

Over 200 expressions of interest were received, with 161 individuals participating.
Consumer participation ensured the relevance of findings for end-users.
Media releases significantly boosted volunteer participation.

Conclusions:

Consumer involvement enhances the applicability of primary health-care research findings.
Recommendations for supporting individuals bereaved by suicide were developed.
The study provides a model for effective consumer engagement in sensitive research areas.
