Summary

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) modified with aspartic acid (Asp) shows altered properties, enabling selective basic protein loading. This makes Asp-modified HAp a promising carrier for drug delivery applications, particularly for basic proteins like bFGF and BMP.

Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Materials Chemistry
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a key biomaterial for drug delivery and tissue engineering.
  • Physico-chemical modifications are crucial for developing advanced HAp carrier materials.
  • Acidic amino acids, like aspartic acid (Asp), show affinity for both HAp and basic proteins.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of aspartic acid (Asp) on the physico-chemical properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp).
  • To evaluate the potential of Asp-modified HAp as a carrier for basic proteins in drug delivery.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of HAp in the presence of varying concentrations of Asp.
  • Characterization of HAp crystallinity and physico-chemical properties.
  • Protein adsorption studies using basic proteins.

Main Results:

  • Asp modification modulated HAp crystallinity and physico-chemical properties.
  • Asp was trapped within HAp crystals, not incorporated into the lattice.
  • Asp-modified HAp exhibited selective loading capacity for basic proteins.

Conclusions:

  • Asp-modified HAp demonstrates potential as a bioactive carrier material.
  • This material is particularly suitable for the targeted delivery of basic proteins such as bFGF and BMP.
