Hyperfractionated and accelerated radiotherapy (HART) offers a promising treatment for rare angiosarcoma after breast-conserving therapy (BCT). This novel approach achieved high rates of local control and survival in a recent study.

  • Focus on angiosarcoma that developed subsequent to BCT.
  • Main Results:

    • Nine out of 14 patients remained disease-free for a median of 61 months post-HART.
    • Five patients experienced disease recurrence or progression, often with pre-existing pulmonary/mediastinal disease.
    • Two-year and five-year progression-free survival rates were 71% and 64%, respectively.
    • Overall and cause-specific survival rates were 86% at both 2 and 5 years.

    Conclusions:

    • HART, with or without surgery, appears to be the first approach yielding high local control and survival rates for post-BCT angiosarcoma.
    • The study suggests that the hyperfractionation and acceleration of radiotherapy contribute to the observed success.
    • This approach offers a potential new standard for managing this challenging condition.
