Summary

Laparoscopic sphincter-preserving total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer demonstrates safe, long-term oncological outcomes comparable to open surgery. This minimally invasive approach offers comparable survival and disease-free survival rates.

  • Study period: March 1999 to March 2009.
  • Median follow-up of 49 months.
  • Main Results:

    • Low conversion rate (1%) and no operative mortality.
    • Local recurrence observed in 5.1% of patients.
    • Overall 5-year survival: 74%; 5-year disease-free survival: 71%.

    Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic sphincter-preserving TME is a safe procedure for rectal cancer.
    • Long-term oncological outcomes are comparable to open TME.
