Hypertension III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies01:30

Hypertension III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

Hypertension is asymptomatic and also referred to as the "silent killer" until it progresses to a severe stage or causes target organ disease. Patients may experience symptoms stemming from the strain on blood vessels and tissues in various organs or the heart's increased workload.Physical exams might show no abnormalities other than high blood pressure. Signs of vascular damage, when present, correspond to the organs supplied by the affected vessels, leading to target organ damage. For...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-IV: Assessement and Diagnostic Studies

Assessing and diagnosing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a detailed approach that includes a comprehensive review of medical history, physical examination, and a variety of diagnostic tests. This thorough evaluation is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis and guide effective management strategies.

Rheumatic Heart Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

The key clinical manifestations of Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) include several distinct cardiac symptoms.Carditis, a hallmark of acute rheumatic fever, involves inflammation of the heart's endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium. Chronic RHD often results from recurrent episodes of carditis. Its symptoms include the following:Murmurs are caused by valvular damage, especially to the mitral and aortic valves. Mitral stenosis or regurgitation is common, with characteristic heart murmurs...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Limited research exists on chronic daily headaches (CDH) prevalence using public health resources.
  • Understanding CDH in diverse populations is crucial for effective public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the 1-year prevalence of CDH in a representative rural Brazilian population.
  • To investigate the co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) with CDH.

Main Methods:

  • A two-phase, population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in rural Brazil.
  • Health agents interviewed 1631 individuals; those with frequent headaches were further assessed by a multidisciplinary team.
  • Diagnoses followed ICHD-2 for headaches, DSM-IV for psychiatric conditions, and RDC/TMD for temporomandibular disorders.

Main Results:

  • The 1-year prevalence of CDH was 3.6% (57 individuals).
  • Chronic migraine was the most frequent CDH type (36.8%), followed by medication overuse headache (22.8%).
  • Comorbidities were high: 67.3% had psychiatric disorders and 58.1% had TMD.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of CDH in this rural Brazilian population is comparable to other studies.
  • A substantial number of individuals with CDH experience co-occurring psychiatric disorders and/or TMD.
  • Comorbidity rates in this population sample mirror those found in specialized headache clinics.
