Summary

Fulvestrant effectively reduced prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in a patient with androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC) without causing side effects. This suggests fulvestrant may be a viable treatment option for advanced prostate cancer.

Background:

  • Androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC) presents significant treatment challenges.
  • Estrogen receptor dimerization inhibition by fulvestrant and androgen receptor's role in prostate cancer growth are known mechanisms.

Observation:

  • A 79-year-old male with metastatic prostate cancer and AIPC received fulvestrant acetate.
  • A loading dose strategy was employed for fulvestrant administration.

Findings:

  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels dramatically decreased from 154 ng/ml to 0.45 ng/ml within 8 weeks.
  • No significant adverse side effects were reported during the treatment period.

Implications:

  • Fulvestrant demonstrates potential efficacy in managing AIPC.
