Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Social Work
  • Mental Health Services

Background:

  • Suicide prevention is a critical public health issue.
  • Restricting access to lethal means, including firearms, is an effective strategy.
  • Physician education and patient counseling are vital components of suicide prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine social workers' attitudes toward firearm risk assessment and safety counseling.
  • To identify factors influencing social workers' positive attitudes regarding firearm safety practices.
  • To inform training needs for mental health professionals in suicide prevention.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to a random sample of 697 licensed social workers in Ohio.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to determine predictors of positive attitudes toward firearm assessment and counseling.
  • Independent factors influencing social workers' likelihood of holding positive attitudes were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Prior training in firearm safety significantly increased positive attitudes by 91.1%.
  • Reporting from an urban area increased positive attitudes by 44.7%.
  • Both factors (p < .05) were significant predictors of favorable views on firearm safety counseling.

Conclusions:

  • Training mental health professionals in firearm safety assessment and counseling is essential.
  • Enhancing social workers' capacity in firearm safety counseling can improve suicide prevention.
  • Targeted training and support for social workers, particularly in urban settings, may bolster suicide prevention efforts.
