Summary

Brachyspira murdochii, a normal gut bacteria in pigs, can cause catarrhal colitis when present in high numbers. This study shows the low pathogenicity of this porcine spirochete.

  • Extensive spirochetal colonization of the surface epithelium was observed.

Findings:

  • Experimental challenge with B. murdochii reproduced catarrhal colitis in 2 of 8 pigs.
  • High numbers of B. murdochii were found associated with the epithelium in affected animals.
  • Fluorescent in situ hybridization confirmed B. murdochii presence and location.

Implications:

  • Brachyspira murdochii demonstrates low pathogenicity in pigs.
  • High bacterial loads are associated with the development of catarrhal colitis.
  • Further research into B. murdochii's role in swine health is warranted.
