  • Symptom severity was assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression by masked raters.
  • Main Results:

    • Acupuncture specific for depression showed a significantly greater decrease in symptom severity compared to combined controls and control acupuncture alone.
    • The response rate for specific acupuncture (63.0%) was significantly higher than for combined controls (44.3%) and control acupuncture (37.5%).
    • No significant differences in symptom reduction or response rates were observed between control acupuncture and massage.

    Conclusions:

    • A short acupuncture protocol is effective in reducing depressive symptoms during pregnancy.
    • Acupuncture demonstrates a response rate comparable to standard depression treatments of similar duration.
    • Acupuncture presents a viable treatment option for managing depression in pregnant individuals.
