1Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Cardiovascular Division, 3 Blackfan Circle, Room 910, Boston, MA 02215, USA.
Insights
Vitamin D deficiency is linked to cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D therapy shows potential benefits for heart failure patients, though its cardiac mechanisms require further study.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology
- Nutritional Science
Background:
- Vitamin D deficiency is increasingly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD).
- Vitamin D supplementation may offer benefits in managing congestive heart failure (CHF).
- The precise mechanisms of vitamin D's action within the heart remain unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the potential mechanisms of vitamin D action in cardiac dysfunction.
- To examine experimental and clinical evidence supporting vitamin D's role in cardiovascular disease treatment.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of experimental studies.
- Analysis of clinical trial data.
- Synthesis of current research on vitamin D and cardiac health.
Main Results:
- Evidence suggests a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and increased cardiovascular risk.
- Vitamin D therapy demonstrates potential for improving mortality and morbidity in heart failure.
- Further research is needed to elucidate the specific molecular pathways involved.
Conclusions:
- Vitamin D plays a potential role in cardiovascular health and heart failure management.
- Understanding vitamin D's mechanisms in the heart is crucial for therapeutic development.
- Clinical studies highlight the need for further investigation into vitamin D supplementation for cardiovascular conditions.
Abstract:
Accumulating evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular disease, and that vitamin D therapy may have significant mortality and morbidity benefits in the treatment of congestive heart failure. However, the potential protective role of vitamin D in the heart, as well as the mechanism of action of the hormone in this organ, are poorly understood. In this review, the potential mechanisms of action of vitamin D in cardiac dysfunction are discussed, and the experimental and clinical findings that provide evidence for a role of vitamin D in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases are reviewed.Accumulating evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular disease, and that vitamin D therapy may have significant mortality and morbidity benefits in the treatment of congestive heart failure.
