Summary

Renal sinus lacunae, small spaces linked to urinary obstruction, are confirmed by urographic-pathologic correlation. This finding helps differentiate them from papillary necrosis in imaging.

Background:

  • Lacunae are rarely described spaces within the renal sinus.
  • They are thought to form due to urine extravasation from caliceal fornices during urinary obstruction.

Observation:

  • Two cases of obstructive uropathy were examined.

Findings:

  • The study provides the first gross anatomic and histologic evidence of renal sinus lacunae.
  • Urographic findings in these cases were confirmed pathologically.

  • This can help prevent misdiagnosis, particularly differentiating from papillary necrosis on excretory urography.
