Background:

Limited published data exists on correctional health (CH) curriculum.
Correctional healthcare settings present unique challenges and patient populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a comprehensive curriculum for correctional health (CH) workers.
To address the specialized knowledge and skills required for effective CH practice.

Main Methods:

Focus groups were conducted with nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians.
Discussions centered on essential content for preparing competent CH professionals.

Main Results:

Six key themes emerged: population characteristics, prevalent conditions, public health opportunities, ethical considerations, medical-legal issues, and CH system administration.
These themes informed and expanded an existing CH curriculum.

Conclusions:

Effective healthcare in correctional settings necessitates specialized training beyond standard medical education.
The developed curriculum aims to equip healthcare professionals with the unique competencies required for correctional environments.
