Insights

This study reveals double-vessel disease is most common in Iranian patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The left anterior descending artery showed the highest blockage prevalence, highlighting ethnicity

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Vascular Biology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Coronary angiography is a common procedure, but data on coronary artery blockages often lack ethnic diversity.
  • Limited information exists regarding the location and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in non-White populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the location and magnitude of coronary artery blockages in Iranian patients with symptomatic CAD.
  • To analyze angiographic data to identify common culprit arteries and CAD severity in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 94 diagnostic coronary angiography records from patients with CAD symptoms.
  • Data collected between February 2002 and September 2004 at a tertiary heart hospital in Iran.
  • Evaluation of culprit coronary arteries and the extent of CAD.

Main Results:

  • Double-vessel disease was the most frequent type of CAD observed.
  • The left anterior descending (LAD) artery was the most commonly affected artery (84%).
  • Other affected arteries included the right coronary artery (RCA) (64%), circumflex artery (CX) (37%), obtuse marginal (OM) artery (13%), and left main stem (LMS) (3%).

Conclusions:

  • The study found a high prevalence of LAD blockages in the studied Iranian population.
  • Results suggest that ethnicity may play a significant role in the patterns of coronary artery blockages.
  • Findings contribute to a better understanding of CAD presentation across diverse ethnic groups.
