A 12-week multidisciplinary preoperative program (SMPP) significantly improved short-term weight loss in Medicaid patients undergoing Lap-Band surgery. Adherence to the SMPP program led to greater excess weight loss compared to non-compliant patients.
Area of Science:
- Bariatric Surgery
- Obesity Management
- Public Health Interventions
Background:
- The impact of preoperative education on Lap-Band surgery outcomes is not well-defined.
- This study investigated a standardized 12-week multidisciplinary preoperative program (SMPP) in a Medicaid population.
- The program included medical, psychological, and nutritional interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if completing the SMPP improves preoperative and early postoperative weight loss.
- To compare weight loss between SMPP-compliant and non-compliant patients.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured preoperative program for bariatric surgery patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of a prospectively collected database of 292 Lap-Band patients.
- Patients were divided into SMPP-compliant and non-SMPP-compliant groups.
- Postoperative weight loss was compared using general linear models for repeated measures.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in baseline weight or BMI between groups.
- Excess weight loss was significantly greater in the SMPP-compliant group at 12 months (P = .04).
- Postoperative follow-up rates were 94.5% at 1 month, 72.3% at 6 months, and 52.7% at 12 months.
Conclusions:
- An intensive preoperative SMPP significantly improved short-term weight loss after Lap-Band placement in a Medicaid population.
- The findings support the implementation of structured preoperative programs for bariatric surgery patients.
- Adherence to multidisciplinary preoperative interventions is crucial for optimizing weight loss outcomes.
