Carbon monoxide poisoning severity may not correlate with initial carboxyhaemoglobin levels. Prompt hyperbaric oxygen therapy can significantly improve neurological impairment in carbon monoxide intoxication cases.

Area of Science:

  • Toxicology
  • Neurology
  • Hyperbaric Medicine

Background:

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication is a common poisoning.
  • Neurological sequelae can occur even with low initial carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) levels.

Observation:

  • Two cases presented with severe neurological impairment despite low admission COHb levels (2% and 1.7%).
  • Both patients showed significant improvement after hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

Findings:

  • Neurological recovery was observed following HBOT in patients with CO poisoning.
  • Recurrent symptoms in one case responded to a second course of HBOT, suggesting a role for delayed treatment.

Implications:

  • HBOT may be beneficial for managing neurological complications of CO poisoning.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research into the mechanisms and optimal timing of HBOT for CO intoxication is warranted.
