Background:

Native Hawaiians experience higher cancer mortality rates compared to white populations.
Numerous barriers hinder access to quality cancer care for Native Hawaiians.
Cancer navigator programs offer crucial support to patients and families, facilitating early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

To design a training curriculum for community-based outreach workers serving Native Hawaiians.
To equip these workers with essential cancer patient navigator skills.

Main Methods:

The Ho'okele i ke Ola (Navigating to Health) curriculum was developed using input from Native Hawaiian patients, families, outreach workers, and providers.
A 48-hour curriculum focused on cancer knowledge, resources, and communication, offered in three formats: intensive urban training, hybrid neighbor island/urban training, and independent study.
Trainee skills were assessed through interviews post-session and at 3-month follow-up.

Main Results:

62 health workers were trained across community, clinical, and community college settings within 18 months.
Training was delivered in Honolulu and on neighbor islands, with earlier graduates assisting as co-faculty.
Follow-up data indicated improvements in trainees' knowledge, skills, capacity, and confidence in cancer navigation.

Conclusions:

The Ho'okele i ke Ola curriculum, developed collaboratively with community input, effectively enhanced cancer patient navigation skills.
All three curriculum versions demonstrated success in equipping trainees to better support cancer patients and families.
