Summary

Pediatric axillary wounds with complete neurovascular damage are rare. Surgical repair and rehabilitation led to excellent functional recovery in a 9-year-old boy, suggesting better outcomes in children.

Background:

  • Axillary wounds with complete neurovascular division are uncommon, particularly in children.
  • While surgical repair is recommended, severe neurological deficits can result, with recovery often being partial and prolonged in adults.

Observation:

  • A 9-year-old boy sustained an axillary wound with complete transection of the axillary artery and multiple nerves (median, ulnar, radial, musculocutaneous, medial cutaneous nerve of arm).

Findings:

  • The patient underwent vascular reconstruction using a venous graft and epiperineural nerve repair.
  • Post-operative management included intensive kinetotherapy and physiotherapy.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for significant functional recovery in pediatric patients with extensive axillary neurovascular injuries.
  • Early surgical intervention combined with comprehensive rehabilitation can lead to near-complete motor and sensory function restoration in children.
