Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Osteogenic bone particles translocated during implant placement may aid peri-implant bone healing.
  • Undersized drilling techniques are hypothesized to improve implant stability and bone particle osteogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of undersized surgical techniques on primary implant stability and osteogenic response.
  • To compare press-fit versus undersized techniques for implant insertion.

Main Methods:

  • Biocomp implants were inserted into cadaver bone using press-fit or undersized techniques.
  • Insertion torque values (ITV) were measured.
  • Post-explantation, implants were cultured and analyzed using histology, micro-CT, SEM, and calcium measurements.

Main Results:

  • Implants placed with undersized techniques exhibited significantly higher ITV.
  • Histology, micro-CT, SEM, and calcium analyses confirmed increased bone-like tissue on undersized implants.
  • Undersized technique led to more translocated bone particles.

Conclusions:

  • The undersized surgical technique enhances primary implant stability.
  • This technique positively influences the osteogenic response by increasing translocated bone particles, promoting peri-implant bone healing.
