    Summary

Concave grating efficiency is significantly reduced by diffusion pump oil contamination, especially at mid-range wavelengths. Cleaning methods like vapor degreasing and gold overcoating can restore performance.

    Main Results:

    • Contamination caused significant efficiency loss at intermediate wavelengths (e.g., between 1216 A and 4000 A).
    • Efficiency was largely unaffected at the extreme wavelengths tested (1216 A and 4000 A).
    • Vapor degreasing partially restored efficiency, while gold overcoating fully restored it.

    Conclusions:

    • Diffusion pump oil contamination severely impacts concave grating efficiency at specific wavelengths.
    • Gold overcoating is a highly effective method for restoring contaminated grating efficiency.
    • Proper maintenance and cleaning protocols are essential for optical instrument longevity.
