Focusing of Light in the Eye01:16

Focusing of Light in the Eye

Light rays enter the eye through the cornea, a transparent dome-shaped tissue that is the eye's outermost layer. The cornea bends or refracts, light rays traveling to the pupil. The shape of the cornea determines how much of the light is bent and whether the image will be focused correctly on the retina at the back of the eye. Once the light has passed through both refraction layers, it converges into a single focal point onto a small area. This is where photoreceptors start transforming...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...
Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.
Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Summary

The 1CU intraocular lens (IOL) shows stable but insufficient accommodative movement for presbyopic correction over five years. Long-term outcomes reveal limited functional accommodation despite pilocarpine stimulation.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Optics

Context:

  • Cataract surgery involves intraocular lens (IOL) implantation to restore vision.
  • Accommodative intraocular lenses aim to mimic the natural eye's focusing ability.
  • Evaluating the long-term performance of new IOL designs is crucial for clinical adoption.

Purpose:

  • To assess the long-term clinical outcomes and objective accommodative dynamics of the 1CU posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL).
  • To evaluate pseudophakic accommodation and pseudo-accommodation in eyes implanted with the 1CU IOL.
  • To investigate the influence of laser capsulotomy on pseudophakic accommodation.

Summary:

  • A retrospective study included 26 eyes with 1CU IOLs, examining accommodative response to pilocarpine and cyclopentolate.
  • Over a mean follow-up of 50.8 months, a stable anterior shift of the IOL reflex was observed (-0.49 +/- 0.27 mm) under pilocarpine stimulation (p < 0.001).
  • Pseudo-accommodation averaged 1.5 diopters, and Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy did not significantly alter IOL reflex movement.

Impact:

  • The 1CU IOL demonstrates stable anterior-posterior movement over extended periods.
  • The observed accommodative shift is insufficient to provide full presbyopic correction.
  • Findings guide the development of more effective accommodating intraocular lenses.
