The Replisome03:01

The Replisome

DNA replication is carried out by a large complex of proteins that act in a coordinated matter to achieve high-fidelity DNA replication. Together this complex is known as the DNA replication machinery or the replisome.
The synthesis of the leading and lagging strands is a highly coordinated process. To explain this, the “Trombone model” was proposed by Bruce Alberts in 1980. The DNA loop formation starts when a primer is synthesized on the parent lagging strand. The loop grows with the...

Researchers successfully replicated a concave paraboloid of revolution using a two-step aluminum mold process. The resulting replicas match the original

    Area of Science:

    • Optics
    • Materials Science
    • Manufacturing

    Background:

    • Concave paraboloids of revolution are critical optical components.
    • Manufacturing high-precision optical elements can be costly and complex.
    • Replication offers a potential cost-effective alternative for producing optical components.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate a replication process for concave paraboloids of revolution.
    • To assess the optical quality and scattering properties of replicated components.
    • To evaluate the feasibility of cost-effective replication for Wolter lens components.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of two aluminum molds: one convex and one concave parabola.
    • Two-step replication process utilizing the aluminum molds.

  • Optical testing of the final replicated components to evaluate figure and scattering.
  • Main Results:

    • Successful replication of a concave paraboloid of revolution.
    • Replicated components demonstrated optical figures comparable to the original.
    • Scattering levels of the replicas were not significantly different from the original.
    • Minor cosmetic defects were observed in the replicas.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed two-step replication process is sound for producing high-quality optical components.
    • Replicated concave paraboloids exhibit performance similar to original components.
    • This replication method is anticipated to significantly reduce the cost of Wolter lens components.
