Summary

Plano cosmetic contact lenses can cause serious infectious keratitis, leading to vision loss. Stricter regulations are needed for these cosmetic products to prevent severe eye infections.

Microbiome of the Eye01:22

Microbiome of the Eye

The human eye has a specialized microbiota that reflects its unique anatomical and immunological environment. This low-biomass microbial community predominantly colonizes the conjunctiva and eyelid margins, playing a vital role in ocular surface homeostasis and defense. Despite its proximity to the richly colonized facial skin, the ocular surface maintains a distinct microbial profile due to continuous mechanical and biochemical defense mechanisms. The conjunctival surface hosts fewer microbial...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Contact Lens Research

Background:

  • Plano cosmetic contact lenses are widely used.
  • These lenses are regulated as cosmetic products, not medical devices.
  • Previous incidents suggest potential risks associated with their use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize infectious keratitis cases linked to plano cosmetic lenses.
  • To identify risk factors and clinical outcomes in affected individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case study of infectious keratitis patients wearing plano cosmetic lenses.
  • Analysis of demographic data, medical history, risk factors, microbiological results, and visual acuity.
  • Evaluation of keratitis severity and clinical course.

Published on: May 5, 2022

Main Results:

  • Five female patients (ages 15-50) were identified.
  • All patients had risk factors; infections included bacterial, fungal, and amoebic keratitis.
  • Two cases resulted in legal blindness, one requiring corneal transplantation.

Conclusions:

  • Infectious keratitis from plano cosmetic lenses is a significant risk.
  • Current regulations may be insufficient given the potential for severe visual impairment.
  • Updated sales regulations are recommended, mirroring actions taken in other countries.
