A rare Salmonella typhimurium thyroid abscess was successfully treated with surgery and antibiotics. This case highlights the organism

Background:

  • Thyroid abscesses are uncommon infections.
  • Salmonella species typically cause gastrointestinal infections.
  • Focal Salmonella infections are rare.

Observation:

  • A 79-year-old male presented with fever and neck tenderness.
  • Symptoms appeared two weeks after a diarrheal illness.
  • A Salmonella typhimurium thyroid abscess was diagnosed.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision and a two-week course of ceftriaxone (1g every 12 hours) led to complete recovery.
  • This represents the fourth reported case of Salmonella thyroid abscess.
  • Three of the four cases were caused by Salmonella typhimurium.
