Summary

Chronic growth hormone (GH) excess impairs muscle glucose uptake and nonoxidative metabolism in acromegaly. These metabolic derangements occur early, even in patients with normal glucose tolerance, indicating insulin resistance.

  • Utilized forearm technique and indirect calorimetry to measure substrate exchange and oxidation.
  • Studied nine normal subjects and ten non-diabetic acromegalic patients.

  • Acromegalic patients exhibited significantly reduced forearm glucose uptake and nonoxidative glucose metabolism compared to normal subjects.
