Summary

A cat experienced vomiting and lethargy after ovariohysterectomy due to intestinal strangulation through a mesenteric rent. Surgical repair and resection of 60% of the small intestine led to a positive outcome.

Background:

Ovariohysterectomy is a common surgical procedure in female cats.
Complications, though rare, can occur following abdominal surgery.
Mesenteric rents are potential, albeit uncommon, iatrogenic or spontaneous defects.

Observation:

A 6-month-old domestic shorthair cat presented with acute vomiting and lethargy.
The cat had undergone an elective ovariohysterectomy two weeks prior.
Clinical signs suggested a potential surgical complication or abdominal emergency.

Findings:

Abdominal ultrasound and exploratory laparotomy revealed intestinal strangulation.
The cause was identified as a mesenteric rent, a defect in the tissue supporting the intestines.
Surgical intervention involved intestinal resection and anastomosis, removing 60% of the small intestine.

Implications:

Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing intestinal strangulation.
Significant small intestinal resection can be tolerated with a good prognosis in cats.
This case highlights the importance of recognizing rare complications following routine procedures.
