Area of Science:

  • Geriatrics
  • Internal Medicine
  • Diagnostic Medicine

Background:

  • Unexplained weight loss is a concerning symptom in elderly patients.
  • Identifying the etiology of weight loss is crucial for timely intervention and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and causes of unexplained weight loss in elderly patients.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic investigations for unexplained weight loss in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A case series chart review was conducted on 45 elderly patients with significant unexplained and unintentional weight loss.
  • Data was collected from diagnostic files of seven family practice centers.

Main Results:

  • 24% of patients had no definitive etiology for weight loss after two years.
  • Depression (18%) and cancer (16%) were the most common diagnoses.
  • CT scans were not effective screening tools for evaluating weight loss.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of unexplained weight loss in the elderly remains without a definitive diagnosis.
  • Depression is a more common diagnosis than cancer in this cohort.
  • Diagnostic evaluations for elderly patients with unexplained weight loss can be more efficiently directed based on these findings.
