Summary
Six new cycloartane-type triterpene glycosides were identified from Astragalus icmadophilus. These compounds, along with known glycosides, expand the known chemical diversity of this plant species.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Astragalus species are known sources of diverse bioactive compounds.
- Triterpene glycosides, particularly cycloartane-type, are of significant interest in natural product research.
- Understanding the chemical constituents of Astragalus icmadophilus contributes to ethnopharmacological and chemotaxonomic studies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize novel cycloartane-type triterpene glycosides from Astragalus icmadophilus.
- To elucidate the structures of these isolated compounds using advanced spectroscopic techniques.
- To contribute to the phytochemical knowledge of the Astragalus genus.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation employing 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Mass spectrometry (ESIMS and HRMS) for molecular formula determination.
Main Results:
- Six new cycloartane-type triterpene glycosides were successfully isolated and characterized.
- The structures were determined to be glycosides of cyclocanthogenin, cycloastragenol, and the rare cyclocephalogenin.
- The study also identified known cycloartane glycosides, oleanane glycosides, and a flavonol glycoside.
Conclusions:
- The phytochemical investigation of Astragalus icmadophilus yielded six unprecedented cycloartane-type triterpene glycosides.
- The presence of cyclocephalogenin glycosides highlights a unique chemical characteristic of this species within the Astragalus genus.
- This research expands the repertoire of known natural products and provides valuable data for further biological activity screening and chemotaxonomic analysis.
