  • A prospective study enrolled 478 consecutive patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation weaning.
  • Psychiatric interviews were conducted by a clinical psychologist to diagnose depressive disorders.

  • Depressive disorders were diagnosed in 42% (142/336) of evaluable patients.
  • Patients with depressive disorders showed higher rates of weaning failure (61% vs. 33%) and mortality (24% vs. 10%).

  • Depressive disorders are prevalent in patients being weaned from prolonged mechanical ventilation.
  • The presence of depressive disorders significantly increases the likelihood of weaning failure and mortality.
