The role of matrix metalloproteinases in recurrent tonsillitis

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) were analyzed in children with recurrent tonsillitis (RT). Elevated MMP-9 and MMP-7 levels were observed with increased tonsillar hypertrophy, suggesting their role in chronic tonsillitis.
