Summary

Anticonvulsants show limited effectiveness for treating alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). While carbamazepine may offer some benefits over benzodiazepines, overall evidence does not strongly support their use in AWS treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of anticonvulsant medications in treating alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS).

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (Cochrane, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, EconLIT) up to December 2009.
  • Included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing anticonvulsants with placebo or other pharmacological treatments for AWS.
  • Data extraction and screening were performed independently by two authors.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-six studies with 4076 participants were analyzed.
  • No significant differences were found when comparing anticonvulsants to placebo for AWS outcomes.
