Summary

Pre-anesthesia with lignocaine did not significantly improve tracheal intubation quality or reduce the pressor response compared to saline in patients undergoing anesthesia. This study found no significant differences between the two treatments.

Background:

  • Tracheal intubation can elicit a pressor response, a physiological stress reaction.
  • Lidocaine (lignocaine) is sometimes used intravenously to mitigate this response before intubation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of intravenous lignocaine pretreatment in improving tracheal intubation quality.
  • To assess the impact of lignocaine on the pressor response to tracheal intubation.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind study involving sixty patients (ASA grade 1, aged 18-55 years).
  • Anesthesia induced with propofol (2.5 mg/kg) after pretreatment with either lignocaine (1.5 mg/kg) or isotonic saline.
  • Assessment of tracheal intubation quality and pressor response to intubation.

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in the quality of tracheal intubation between the lignocaine and saline groups.

Conclusions:

  • Intravenous lignocaine pretreatment does not appear to offer significant advantages over saline for improving tracheal intubation quality or blunting the pressor response in this patient population.
  • Further research may be warranted to explore alternative or adjunct methods for managing the physiological stress of tracheal intubation.
