Summary

Natural interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) effectively induced remission in a patient with acute leukemia resistant to conventional chemotherapy. This interferon therapy normalized blood counts and maintained remission for over seven months.

Background:

  • Acute leukemia presents with increased blast cells and often requires intensive chemotherapy.
  • Conventional chemotherapy regimens like BHAC-DMP and low-dose Ara-C can be ineffective in certain leukemia cases.
  • Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is a cytokine with known immunomodulatory and antiproliferative effects.

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old male patient with acute leukemia presented with hypocellular bone marrow and 50% blast infiltration.
  • The patient's leukemia was refractory to initial treatment with BHAC-DMP and low-dose Ara-C chemotherapy.
  • Natural interferon-alpha (nIFN-alpha) was administered as a monotherapy.

Findings:

  • Treatment with nIFN-alpha resulted in a significant reduction of bone marrow blasts to below 3% within one month.
