Summary

Public health nurses are increasingly vital for caring for individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). However, surveys show many nurses lack experience and require more training to manage the growing epidemic.

Background:

  • The increasing prevalence and longevity of patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) necessitate a greater role for public health nurses in caring for individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

  • To assess the current level of experience and perceived training needs of public health nurses regarding HIV/AIDS patient care.
