Background:

Observation:

  • Breathing zone air lead levels exceeded the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standard for two instructors using non-jacketed bullets.
  • Cadets firing non-jacketed and jacketed lead ammunitions were observed.

Findings:

  • Totally copper-jacketed bullets reduced breathing zone lead levels by 92% and 96% for two instructors.
  • Blood lead levels significantly declined in both instructors after switching to jacketed bullets.

Implications:

  • Switching to copper-jacketed bullets can effectively mitigate lead exposure for firearm instructors.
  • Implementing safer ammunition types is vital for protecting occupational health in firing range environments.
