Relationship with Parents: Attachment01:28

Relationship with Parents: Attachment

Parent-child interactions lay the foundation for how we understand relationships throughout life. These interactions are not uniform across families; instead, they are shaped by a range of environmental, emotional, and behavioral factors unique to each caregiver-child dynamic. Social psychologists study these early relationships to understand how patterns formed in infancy influence social functioning and interpersonal behavior in adulthood.Attachment Theory and Early Relational ModelsJohn...

Urodynamic Studies: Uroflowmetry

Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive urodynamic test designed to measure various aspects of urination, including volume, flow rate, and the time to void. This test is crucial for diagnosing and assessing conditions such as bladder outlet obstruction, bladder dysfunction, incomplete bladder emptying, incontinence, and urinary tract blockages caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urethral strictures.Pre-Test Instructions:Before a uroflowmetry test, patients are typically advised to drink...

Imaging Studies VI: Voiding Cystourethrography and Cystography

Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG) and Cystography are specialized radiographic procedures used to examine the structure and function of the bladder and urethra.Voiding Cystourethrography (VCUG)A Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that assesses the anatomy and function of the lower urinary tract. It focuses on the bladder, bladder neck, and urethra, helping detect abnormalities such as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)—the backward or reverse flow of urine into the...
Disorders of the Urinary System01:20

Disorders of the Urinary System

The urinary system is responsible for eliminating waste and excess fluids from the body. However, disorders of the urinary system can arise due to various reasons like infections, stress, age, congenital abnormalities, and lifestyle.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary system disorders. They are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and can spread to the bladder resulting in cystitis. Pyelonephritis is the result of a UTI that has ascended to the level of the...
The Micturition Reflex01:26

The Micturition Reflex

Urination, or micturition involves the coordination of the bladder's detrusor muscle and two sphincters to ensure controlled bladder emptying.
The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating urine...
Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Anal01:26

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Anal

Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development describes the anal stage as occurring between 18 months and three years of age. During this period, children derive pleasure from controlling and releasing their bowel movements. However, they quickly learn that societal expectations impose restrictions on when and where this can happen. This stage marks a critical point where children begin to develop a sense of control and mastery over their bodily functions, as well as their broader...

Summary

Parents of children with overactive bladder (OAB) and dysfunctional voiding (DV) often experienced similar childhood urinary symptoms. These childhood OAB symptoms can persist into adulthood, suggesting a familial link in these conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Urology
  • Genetics and Heredity
  • Urogynecology

Background:

  • Overactive bladder (OAB) and dysfunctional voiding (DV) are common pediatric conditions.
  • The familial aggregation of these conditions is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of childhood urinary symptoms in parents of children diagnosed with OAB or DV.
  • To determine if there is a familial link between parental and pediatric lower urinary tract symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 173 parents of children with OAB/DV and 98 controls.
  • Parental childhood symptoms assessed via a 19-item questionnaire.
  • Current urogenital symptoms evaluated using the Urogenital Distress Inventory.

Main Results:

  • Mothers of children with OAB/DV reported significantly more childhood urinary symptoms than control mothers.
  • Childhood OAB symptoms showed persistence into adulthood.
  • Fathers of children with OAB stopped bed-wetting at a later age compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • A significant association exists between childhood overactive bladder symptoms in children and their parents.
  • Dysfunctional voiding symptoms in children also show a familial association, though to a lesser extent.
