Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...
Preventive Healthcare Services01:30

Preventive Healthcare Services

Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:
Coronary Artery Disease IV: Preventive Measures01:26

Coronary Artery Disease IV: Preventive Measures

Effective preventive measures for coronary artery disease (CAD) focus on controlling modifiable risk factors, including cholesterol abnormalities and lifestyle changes.Cholesterol ManagementFirst, the Mediterranean diet and the American Heart Association advocate for maintaining low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL, with a more stringent recommendation of below 70 mg/dL for individuals at high risk. LDL cholesterol, often termed "bad cholesterol," can lead to the...
Protecting Self-Esteem01:27

Protecting Self-Esteem

Self-esteem, a central component of psychological well-being, is actively maintained through various cognitive and behavioral strategies. Individuals employ specific mechanisms to preserve a positive self-concept and mitigate threats to their self-worth, particularly in contexts involving social evaluation or personal feedback. Four primary techniques are commonly used to sustain self-esteem.Manipulating AppraisalsOne prominent strategy involves manipulating appraisals from others. Individuals...
Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Substance use among adolescents remains a significant public health concern.
  • Effective, brief interventions are needed to mitigate adolescent substance use.
  • Image-based messaging offers a novel approach to prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a brief image-based prevention intervention for adolescents.
  • To assess if current drug use moderates the intervention's effects.
  • To examine the intervention's impact on health behavior goal setting and substance use.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized clinical trial involving 416 high school-age adolescents.
  • Comparison between a brief intervention group and a usual care control group.
  • Data collected at baseline and 3-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • The brief intervention increased health behavior goal setting (d = 0.33).
  • Overall small effects favoring the intervention were observed for smoking and alcohol use (ds = 0.16-0.21).
  • Adolescents with current substance use showed significantly larger reductions in alcohol and cigarette use and fewer problems (ds = 0.32-0.43).

Conclusions:

  • Brief image-based interventions can enhance health goal setting in adolescents.
  • These interventions show promise in reducing adolescent substance use, particularly for those with existing use.
  • Tailored, image-based communication may be an effective strategy for adolescent substance use prevention.
