Summary

This study investigated Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) associations in Chinese patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Certain HLA antigens like B5 and DR2 showed correlations with specific clinical and serological features of SLE.

Background:

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with variable clinical manifestations.
  • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes are known to influence autoimmune disease susceptibility and presentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific HLA-A, B, and DR antigens and clinical/serological parameters in Chinese patients with SLE.
  • To identify potential HLA markers for disease characteristics in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of HLA-A, B, and DR antigen frequencies in 100 consecutive Chinese SLE patients.
  • Correlation of HLA antigen presence with clinical data (e.g., malar rash, sex) and serological markers (e.g., anti-Ro/SSA antibody).

Main Results:

  • HLA-B5 was significantly associated with the presence of other autoimmune diseases and the absence of malar rash.
  • HLA-B35 showed a significant association with male sex.

Conclusions:
