Background:

  • Exclusive breastfeeding (EBFing) is recommended for infant health.
  • The impact of EBFing on maternal anthropometry requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of exclusive breastfeeding (EBFing) practice on maternal anthropometry during the first 6 months postpartum.

Main Methods:

  • A matched cohort study compared women practicing EBFing with those using other infant feeding methods.
  • Maternal weight, height, triceps skin-fold thickness (TST), and mid-arm circumference (MAC) were measured.

Main Results:

  • EBFing mothers experienced significantly higher weight loss (4.13 kg) compared to non-EBFing mothers (1.06 kg) within 6 months.
  • Significant reductions in MAC and TST were observed in EBFing mothers.
  • Despite weight loss, maternal weight/height Z scores (WHZ) and body mass index (BMI) remained within normal limits for both groups.

Conclusions:

  • Exclusive breastfeeding (EBFing) promotes greater maternal weight loss.
  • Maternal nutritional status is maintained within normal limits even with significant weight loss associated with EBFing.
