Background:

Skin sensitivity to external stimuli can be influenced by various physiological factors.
The menstrual cycle involves significant hormonal fluctuations that may impact systemic and local responses.
Understanding skin reactivity patterns is crucial for dermatology and product safety assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate whether skin reactivity to chemical irritants exhibits cyclic variations throughout the menstrual cycle.
To determine if hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle affect the skin's response to irritant patch testing.

Main Methods:

Twenty-nine healthy women with regular menstrual cycles participated in the study.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) irritant patch tests were applied on day 1 and days 9-11 of the menstrual cycle.
Skin responses were assessed using visual scoring, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), edema, and blood flow measurements.

Main Results:

Skin reactivity to SLS was significantly higher on day 1 compared to days 9-11.
Visual scoring indicated a stronger irritant response on day 1 (p < 0.05).
Objective measurements confirmed this, with significantly higher TEWL (p < 0.05) and edema formation (p < 0.005) on day 1.

Conclusions:

A distinct cyclic variation in skin reactivity to irritants exists, correlating with the menstrual cycle.
The skin demonstrates increased sensitivity to irritants in the early follicular phase (day 1) of the menstrual cycle.
These findings suggest hormonal modulation of skin barrier function and inflammatory responses.
