Background:

  • Early diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) is crucial for curative treatment.
  • Prostatic-specific antigen (PSA) has limitations, including a low positive predictive value, leading to unnecessary biopsies.
  • Novel biomarkers are needed for improved PCa detection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic potential of differential display code 3 (DD3(PCA3)) mRNA for prostate cancer.
  • To assess DD3(PCA3) mRNA expression in patients with suspected PCa.

Main Methods:

  • 186 patients with suspected PCa were analyzed.
  • DD3(PCA3) and PSA mRNA expression were quantified using quantitative RT real-time PCR.
  • DD3(PCA3)/PSA mRNA ratio was determined.

Main Results:

  • DD3(PCA3) mRNA levels were significantly higher in PCa patients compared to those with benign prostatic hyperplasia (p<0.045).
  • No significant differences in DD3(PCA3) mRNA levels were found between organ-confined and advanced/metastatic PCa, or by Gleason score.

Conclusions:

  • DD3(PCA3) is a promising marker for the early detection of prostate cancer.
  • DD3(PCA3) aids in the differential diagnosis between benign prostatic hyperplasia and PCa.
