Rabies is a lethal zoonotic disease caused by a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus of the Lyssavirus genus, within the family Rhabdoviridae.     Background:

    • Protothecosis is a rare infection caused by achlorophyllic algae of the genus Prototheca.
    • While documented in various species, cases in goats are infrequent.

    Observation:

    • A goat presented with severe respiratory difficulty and ulcerative nodules on the face, nasal vestibule, and nostrils.
    • Prototheca wickerhamii was isolated from the lesions.
    • The affected goat showed no signs of immunodepression.

    Findings:

    • The isolated Prototheca wickerhamii strain exhibited high resistance to antimicrobial drugs.
    • Histopathology revealed necrotizing pyogranulomatous dermatitis, rhinitis, and osteomyelitis.
    • Treatment with fluconazole was unsuccessful, and the animal was euthanized 10 months post-diagnosis.

    Implications:

    • Protothecosis in goats appears to be a chronic, progressive infection in immunocompetent animals.
    • The disease manifests as multifocal, ulcerative, and necrotizing lesions.
    • This case highlights the challenges in treating protothecosis in livestock due to antimicrobial resistance.
