Summary

Urbanization is increasing neuroschistosomiasis cases, particularly in Recife. This suggests immune status plays a key role in developing schistosomal myelitis, especially post-rainy season.

Background:

  • Urbanization is a known factor in schistosomiasis transmission.
  • Neuroschistosomiasis, specifically spinal cord involvement, is increasingly observed in urbanizing areas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate epidemiological aspects of neuroschistosomiasis.
  • To highlight the trend of neuroschistosomiasis urbanization.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 13 spinal cord schistosomiasis patients was evaluated.
  • Data collected from July 2005 to June 2006, irrespective of symptom onset or origin.

Main Results:

  • The majority of cases (76.92%) originated from the Metropolitan Region of Recife.
  • A significant cluster of cases (61.54%) occurred between October and December, following the rainy season.

Conclusions:

  • The findings indicate a spatial and temporal concentration of neuroschistosomiasis cases in a recently endemic area.
  • Host immunological status may be a critical factor in the development of schistosomal myelitis.
