Summary

Augmentin (amoxycillin/clavulanic acid) can cause delayed, serious liver injury. Clinicians should be aware of this hepatotoxic potential, especially in susceptible patients, and reserve its use for severe infections.

Background:

  • Augmentin (amoxycillin and clavulanic acid) is a widely prescribed antibiotic.
  • Hepatotoxicity is a potential adverse effect of certain medications.

Observation:

  • This study reviewed cases of jaundice associated with Augmentin use.
  • Eight patients treated by authors and 19 reported to ADRAC were analyzed.
  • Jaundice onset was temporally related to Augmentin use, with other causes excluded.

Findings:

  • Hepatitis developed in some patients weeks after Augmentin treatment concluded.
  • The liver illness was serious and protracted, lasting many weeks.
  • No cases of progressive disease leading to liver failure were observed.

Implications:

  • The data suggest clavulanic acid hypersensitivity as the likely cause of Augmentin-induced jaundice.
  • Augmentin should be reserved for severe infections where amoxicillin alone is insufficient.
  • Clinicians must be vigilant for delayed hepatotoxic reactions to Augmentin.
